This post is part of the SkyRoster Training Videos Series.

Welcome to a new SkyRoster video! Today we’ll learn how to customize the working hours for your Organization.

Working hours or shifts are predefined periods within a time interval in a day, in which the staff is at work, resting or has the day off. There are three types of possible shifts: Day shifts, night shifts and Off shifts.

When creating a new shift, we need to make sure to mark it as Night shift or as an Off shift, as appropriate, otherwise it will be considered a Day shift, by default. Furthermore, Off shifts can be of two types: -simple Off shifts, in which the employee is in his rest time; -and On-call shifts, designated by the Off shift with the “Can do replacement” checked. An on-call shift is basically an Off shift in which an employee is at home, but has to remain in stand by and can be called at work to replace a missing employee on another shift or to cover capacity needs, if workload increases. So, if the “Can do replacement” checkbox is not marked, this will be a simple off shift.

Ok, so let’s create a morning shift. To do so, we will fill in the Name of this shift, the Code to be used when displaying this request type in the generated rosters and in the users’ calendars, the minimum rest time after this shift, which will be fulfilled by the roster engine when scheduling next shifts for the same employee, the replacement allowance, which will be added to the employee annual leave days, if he is called to work on this shift from an on-call shift, the text and background colors used to display this shift in the rosters and calendars, the start time and the end time of the shift. And that’s it. Now we can save it and continue to create the next shifts.

Shifts can be edited later on, as necessary, but pay attention to finalize them before actually starting to generate rosters. Working hours are at the core of the SkyRoster configuration system, so each update of a shift will have a strong impact on every other functionality of the system.

The Afternoon shift is similar to the Morning shift. The Night shift has the corresponding checkbox marked. And a simple Off shift, which has the “Can do replacement” un-marked.

Ok, that’s all for today! In the next training video, you will see how to use these working hours to create shift patterns. Don’t forget to subscribe to our Youtube channel to get a notification when the next training video comes out! See you soon!
